City Scene on a Scorching Day: A High-Temperature Thermometer

What Constitutes Extreme Heat?

An Extreme Heat Emergency occurs when daytime and nighttime temperatures continuously rise, significantly exceeding seasonal averages. This poses serious health risks, causing the highest number of weather-related fatalities annually. For instance, in 2021, the BC Coroners Service attributed 595 deaths to extreme heat between June 25 and July 1, primarily due to high indoor temperatures in homes.

The Climate Change Connection

Due to climate change, British Columbia is experiencing hotter summers and more frequent extreme heat days. The region is now one to two degrees warmer on average compared to the 1940s, increasing the likelihood of extreme heat events, like the 2021 heat dome. Understanding and preparing for these conditions is now more crucial than ever.

Pre-Summer Preparation

Before the summer heat arrives, take these steps to get ready:

  1. Identify At-Risk Individuals: Seniors, people living alone, those with pre-existing health conditions, mental illnesses, substance use disorders, pregnant women, infants, and people with limited mobility need special attention.
  2. Plan Ahead: If you live alone and need assistance, arrange for someone to check on you. Plan to visit cooling centres or arrange for cooling measures at home if indoor temperatures exceed 31 degrees Celsius.
  3. Prepare Your Home: Install air conditioners, thermal curtains, and fans. Ensure you have digital thermometers to monitor indoor temperatures.
  4. Find Cooling Spaces: Identify places like libraries, community centres, malls, and parks where you can stay cool. Local authorities may also open emergency cooling centres during extreme heat events.

Responding to Rising Temperatures

When temperatures start to soar:

  • Monitor Alerts: Stay informed through the media, Environment Canada, EmergencyInfoBC, and local health authorities.
  • Activate Your Plan: Relocate to cooler areas, adjust your living spaces, check on at-risk individuals, and use window covers to block out the sun.

During the Heat Event

To stay safe during prolonged heat:

  • Stay Cool Indoors: Use air conditioning if available, or relocate to a cooler place. Keep cool with wet sheets, baths, and plenty of water.
  • Limit Outdoor Activities: Avoid strenuous activities, seek shade, and stay hydrated. Never leave children or pets in parked cars.

Warning Signs of Overheating: Rapid breathing, extreme thirst, and dark urine indicate overheating. Cool down immediately and seek emergency care if needed.

Extreme Heat and Wildfire Risks

Extreme heat can lead to droughts and increased wildfire risks. If you cannot cool down indoors, go outside even if there is smoke. Stay informed about wildfire activities and health impacts from smoke exposure.

Drought and Water Conservation

Droughts, caused by low snow accumulation and delayed rainfall, are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. During droughts, follow local water usage restrictions and conserve water. Ensure your emergency kit includes enough bottled water, refreshing it regularly and repurposing expired water for gardening or cleaning.

Be prepared for extreme heat and drought as daytime and nighttime temperatures continue to rise, well above seasonal norms. Extreme heat poses significant dangers to health and wellbeing, causing the highest number of weather-related deaths annually. In 2021, the BC Coroners Service attributed 595 deaths to an extreme heat event. Climate change has increased the frequency of such events, making it crucial to understand the risks and prepare accordingly. Vulnerable groups, including seniors, individuals with pre-existing conditions, and those without access to air conditioning, need special consideration. Ensure you have a plan, know your home’s cool zones, and identify community cooling spaces like libraries and community centers. Pay attention to heat alerts and take necessary actions, such as relocating to cooler locations and keeping windows covered. During extreme heat, stay hydrated, use air conditioning if available, and avoid strenuous activities. Pets also need protection from the heat. Remember, overheating can be harmful or deadly, so seek emergency care if symptoms arise. Additionally, extreme heat can lead to drought and an increased risk of wildfires. Conserve water and follow local restrictions during drought conditions. Stay informed and prepared to ensure safety during extreme weather events.
