Surrey First mayoral candidate Linda Annis pledges to add 300 police officers, expand surveillance, and make public safety the city’s top priority.
Surrey, B.C. — Surrey First Councillor and mayoral candidate Linda Annis says residents have had enough of gang violence and extortion-related shootings and are demanding stronger leadership at city hall.
“Public safety has to be our city’s biggest priority right now, because without a safe city nothing else matters,” said Annis in a statement released on Monday.
Annis criticized current Mayor Brenda Locke, accusing her of undermining the transition to the Surrey Police Service and delaying recruitment efforts. She said these decisions have cost taxpayers both time and money.
According to Annis, the recent rise in gang and extortion shootings has created fear among residents and business owners across Surrey.
If elected mayor in October, Annis has pledged to:
- Hire 300 additional police officers
- Continue expanding the Surrey Police Service as the city grows
- Establish a police training centre in Surrey
- Provide officers with access to 600 city traffic cameras
- Install 600 new security cameras across the city
“We want our city back,” said Annis. “That means more officers, better training, and visible policing that sends a clear message to gangs and extortionists that they are not welcome in Surrey.”
Annis also stressed the importance of working collaboratively with the Government of British Columbia and local police instead of engaging in political disputes.
“The only fight we should have is with gangs and criminals,” she said.
The municipal election in Surrey is scheduled for October 2026, and public safety is expected to be a central issue in the campaign.
