Protect Quebec’s Children
July 12, 2024
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of Canada’s
Common Sense Conservatives, is demanding the Liberal government
shut down the Benoit Labre injection site in Montreal and stop
allowing hard drug sites near schools.
The Problem:
After nine years, the Liberal-NDP government’s radical hard drug
experiment, supported by the Bloc, has failed. Since Trudeau became
Prime Minister, our once-safe neighbourhoods have become ridden
with crime, chaos, death and disorder. Drug overdose deaths have
increased 166 percent since 2015.
But despite how clear it is that this failed experiment is destroying
lives and our communities, Justin Trudeau is doubling down by
refusing to shut down the Benoit Labre hard drug injection site in
Montreal, located just steps away from an elementary school.
Parents have raised the alarm about this dangerous disaster, saying
that their children are afraid to go to school. Some kids have even
witnessed indecent acts on the sidewalk and have been shouted at.
Residents have described an influx of drug dealers who have been
drawn to the area since the site was opened.
Montrealers no longer recognize their once-safe streets as
homelessness, crime, chaos, and drug abuse have become common.
Montreal’s incompetent mayor has even insisted Montrealers must
learn to live with it. And yet, the Trudeau Government still refuses to
reject the City of Montreal’s request to legalize hard drugs, even
though this same experiment has resulted in a 400 percent increase
in drug overdose deaths in British Columbia.
The Cause:
It wasn’t like this before Justin Trudeau. The Liberal-Bloc-NDP
coalition’s disastrous hard drug experiments have done nothing to
reduce overdose deaths. Since 2015, nearly 45,000 Canadians have
died from drug overdoses, while in Quebec, opioid deaths have
increased by 104 percent.
Justin Trudeau and Marc Miller must put
an immediate end to this dangerous disaster. Under section 56.1 of
the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the government has the
power to accept or refuse a supervised consumption site like Maison
Benoit Labre. Justin Trudeau must immediately shut down this hard-
drug injection site to protect children, reassure families and ensure the safety of Quebecers.
Poilievre Says:
“Montreal families deserve to feel safe in their neighbourhoods. The
safety of children should never be compromised, especially when
going to school. Justin Trudeau’s dangerous hard-drug experiment,
supported by the Bloc and the NDP, must end. Only Common Sense
Conservatives will bring home safe, drug-free streets in Montreal and
across all of Canada.”
