Historic Milestone Achieved
Surrey, BC – July 7, 2024: The Guru Nanak Food Bank (GNFB) in Surrey has reached a historic milestone by organizing a mega food drive that set a new North American record. Collecting an astounding 384.5 tons of food in a single day, this event was a testament to the community’s generosity and support, and it marked the GNFBs fourth anniversary.

Communitys Generosity on Full Display
Held at the bustling Surrey Gurdwara on 152 Street, the food drive saw a steady stream of vehicles delivering essential items such as wheat flour, canned goods, diapers, baby food, sugar, lentils, tea, coffee, and snacks. Running from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., the event not only gathered immense food donations but also received significant financial contributions from both individuals and businesses.

Overwhelming Community Support
Neeraj Walia, GNFB’s head of operations, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the community’s incredible response. “In June alone, our food bank, a non-profit organization, served over 19,000 recipients – the highest number we’ve ever reached,” Walia stated at the event. “The increasing registrations reflect the growing need for our services.”

GNFB manager Noor Sandhu explained that the 20,000 registrations they have represent multiple family members, meaning the actual number of people they help is much higher. “The need is rising daily, with approximately 20 new registrations every day,” Sandhu noted.
Ambitious Goals Surpassed

In past years, GNFB collected 243 tons of food in 2023 and 143 tons in 2022. This year, they set an ambitious goal of 313 tons, which was significantly surpassed thanks to the community’s remarkable generosity. The mega food drive’s success was driven by the efforts of over 200 dedicated volunteers and the steadfast support of the community.
